I Hate You, Dell

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

This morning I got to know Dell very well. I’m not sure how many people work for the company, especially in sales and customer service, but I talked to 15 of their, ahem, lovely employees. I made 10 phone calls. I started the return process at 9:30 AM, and finally finished my journey two hours later. All I wanted to do was return a crappy cell phone.

Last week, I bought the Dell Aero. I would review it but it wasn’t a very important phone to review. Because of its ancient Android 1.5 operating system and questionable heritage from the middling Dell Mini 3i line in China, the phone was not generating much interest. But, having seen the phone in… Continue reading

Archos 28, 32, 43, 70 & 101 Tablets Announced, Feature Android in Range of Sizes

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

We can probably safely assume at this point that tablets are here to stay. At least for awhile. And considering the effort that Archos has already put into the Android-based “tablet” market, there’s no surprise here that they’ve just pulled the curtain off five (5!) brand new tablet devices, all featuring Google’s mobile Operating System. Ranging in sizes and prices, as well as plenty of Archos-based “improvements” to the User Interface, meet the family of new Archos tablets.

The Archos 28 is the bottom of the bunch, featuring a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen, with a resolution of 320×240. It has 4GB of internal storage out of the box, and we’re thinking that this is meant more to be a PMP, and not a… Continue reading

Palm’s webOS 2.0 SDK Heading to Some Developers Today

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

When it comes to webOS, there’s many who believe that the mobile Operating System developed by Palm is far from over and done with. Despite being available on only two devices, people expect good things to come out of HP’s acquisition of the company. A good sign that things are still coming down the pipe broke cover today, as Palm has officially announced that the latest version of their SDK, for webOS 2.0, has now begun to find its way to some developers out there.

While there’s only a select amount of developers being given the new SDK, Palm suggests that it’s actually a larger amount of developers than we might normally imagine. Palm also confirms that there’s going to be plenty… Continue reading

Pixels Eight Times Smaller Than Apple’s Retina Display Created

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

The Retina Display, which is one of the main features of the iPhone 4, stirred quite a bit of discussion after the official announcement. Even scientists got into the fray, putting in their own two cents whenever they were asked. (And yes, we asked.) Apple boasts that the Retina Display is as good as it gets, as the human eye can’t even register anything better. More or less. But that’s not stopping researchers from making it better, though. It’s just been made known that pixels eight times smaller than those used in the Retina Display have been created.

Utilizing nanometer-thin sheets of metal called nanoresonators and slits that actually create the pixels, researchers were able to make pixels that are eight… Continue reading

Babel Fisk Speech to Text Glasses Will Show the Deaf What Someone Says in Real Time

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

For the hearing impaired, getting along in an every day situation, amongst a crowd of people that don’t necessarily have the same impairment may be an issue. And while many can read lips, that may not be the easiest way to go about things. Especially considering not everyone moves their lips the same way to make the same words, which can be a real pain. But, fear not, because a new designer has just come up with a great way to alleviate all of those problems, and all you need to do is wear some glasses.

They may not be as straight-forward as anti-aging glasses, but not many things are now-a-days. These speech-to-text glasses are, though, a great concept that we… Continue reading

SanDisk Fuze+ MP3 Players Announced, Available Now with New Design

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

SanDisks’ Fuze line-up of Personal Media Players have managed to remain present on the market for awhile now, without ever bringing too much attention to themselves. They’re what you might call the “minimal” PMP, with not much going for them in the features department. Fortunately, SanDisk have finally managed to update the PMPs, not only giving them the favorite “+” symbol now, but also making them attractive enough to give a second glance.

The Fuze+ line-up features 3 capacities to choose from: 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB. If you choose one of the lower-memory models, you’ll get to choose from several colors: white, blue, red, black, and purple. However, if you want the 16GB model, that only comes in black, so you won’t… Continue reading

Staples to Start Selling Amazon Kindles This Fall

Although Target had a good run to be the only brick-and-mortar retail location to sell Amazon’s top-selling Kindle device, it looks like they don’t have much longer to shine in the limelight. According to a new announcement from Staples, the nation wide retailer is about ready to start selling the eReader device. And, not just the Kindle, either, but all three of the available models.

Starting this Fall, Staples will officially be carrying all three models of the Kindle line-up. That includes the traditional 3G/WiFi-enabled Kindle, the WiFi-only version, and the larger-than-life Kindle DX. The units will be available in more than 1,550 locations across the country (that means every Staples location, for the record), and you’ll be able to grab… Continue reading

LG Optimus Pad Unveiled, Super Thin and Running Android

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

LG, at this year’s Dealer Days, has officially pulled the curtain off their tablet device. In the same vein as their Optimus line-up of Android-powered smartphones, they’ve just confirmed to the world that there is, indeed, an Optimus Pad. The tablet device is primed to take on the likes of Apple’s iPad, and Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab, even if the specifications are few and far between.

The sign that promotes the device itself seems to hold all of the information we have on the device right now. LG says that it’s running Android (which is no surprise there), and that it will be remarkably thin and light. Furthermore, it’s apparently going to have “many firsts.” We’re not exactly sure what that could… Continue reading

Apple’s annual iPod event is 24 hours away, and we’re counting off the minutes before the traditional SlashGear liveblog.  We’ll be firing up the servers over at http://live.slashgear.com/ in time for the event to begin at 10am Pacific, but if you believe the rumors it’s not just iPods that we can expect.  In addition to talk of a new, much smaller iPod nano, plus a camera-toting iPod touch, we’ve also heard about a possible new online iTunes service.

The exact nature of the online iTunes system is unknown, with predictions ranging from a straightforward, linkable web presence for iTunes media to a full blown streaming media service that might allow users to offload their content to the cloud… Continue reading

Canon XF100 and XF105 Announced, Due Early 2011

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

As far as cameras and camcorders go, there seems to be a hard push for the consumer market. Of course, consumers buy things, so if you can shove all your HD recording into a small package, why not market it to the mainstream market, right? Canon doesn’t want to forget about the “prosumer,” let alone the professional market, and that’s exactly why they’ve brought the XF100 and XF105 into the limelight for a few minutes here. All of the great tech found in a big, shoulder camera, but without all of that big, shoulder mounted necessity.

The manufacturer has just recently officially announced the pair of high-end camcorders. And while it may look like another huge camera for the professional market, Canon… Continue reading

Valkyria Chronicles 2 review: big strategy, war and drama in a handheld package

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

When fans of Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 heard the series would continue on PSP, it’s likely they all asked the same question: How much will the game’s epic feel be watered down to fit on a handheld? Valkyria Chronicles 2 may lose some scale in the battlefield gameplay due to the technological limitations of the PSP, but it still delivers a grand sense of everything else that fans expect. This isn’t Valkyria “lite,” it’s Valkyria “light enough to take with you.”

VC2’s narrative doesn’t realize it’s supposed to be simplified for on-the-go gaming. There’s a lot of story (both personal and political) going on in Valkyria Chronicles 2, as the country of Gallia deals with a bit of Nazi problem. Okay… Continue reading

Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury blowing up XBLA this fall

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

In the mood for explosive news about explosions? Treasure’s multi-scrolling, fruit-collecting shooter series Bangai-O is heading to XBLA this fall, published by D3 Publisher and priced at 800 Microsoft Points. Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury features over 100 levels of omnidirectional blasting. Like its DS predecessor Bangai-O Spirits, it also features a level editor, though presumably the XBLA version won’t require levels to be traded as sound files.

The game will be on display this weekend at PAX for attendees who feel like hitting giant soccer balls into ninja robots — with a baseball bat, in exchange for giant fruit.Continue reading Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury blowing up XBLA this fallBangai-O HD: Missile Fury blowing up XBLA

Pinball games might not seem highly sought after anymore. Whether you blame it on the death of the arcade in America or the ever-increasing complexity of modern games, you’re probably under the impression that the average gamer just isn’t aching to flip a ball around a flashy cabinet.

But according to Zen Studios, its last XBLA game, Pinball FX, was one of best-selling games on Xbox Live Arcade. Come October 13, the studio will launch Pinball FX 2.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Ultimate Edition officially announced — and released

EA officially announced this morning that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Ultimate Edition will be available at retail for $60 on Xbox 360 and PS3 … um, today. Leaked by retail sites earlier this month, the package includes the main game, Onslaught mode, Battlefield 1943 and items originally included in the limited edition.

The “ultimate edition” moniker gives this package a feeling of finality we aren’t exactly comfortable with. Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam, the multiplayer expansion for the game, is still allegedly scheduled for Winter 2010. So, if that ever gets bundled in, what? It’ll be Super Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Ultimate Edition Turbo HD Remix?Continue reading Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Ultimate Edition officially

Namco’s ‘Metro Cross’ and ‘Aero-Cross’ rated

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

[KLOV]

In Australia, the OFLC has rated a game called “Aero-Cross HighAir” developed and published by Namco Bandai. At the same time, GamerBytes reports that the German USK rated an Xbox 360 game called “Metro Cross HighAir GP,” though that rating has since disappeared. The similar names suggest these two ratings are for the same game.

The “Metro Cross” name in the German rating seems to indicate an updated (perhaps Pac-Man CE-like?) version of Namco’s 1985 arcade game Metro-Cross, a side-scrolling foot race game in which players have to avoid giant rolling soda cans. However, it’s hard to reconcile that concept with the name “Aero-Cross,” so it should be interesting to see what Namco Bandai rolls out.

Two new DLC packs crash into Split/Second

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

Two DLC packs are set to liven up Split/Second this week (as if it needed any livening up). The Elite Vehicle Livery Pack adds new liveries for the Brawn, Vixen and Raptor cars and, as a nice bonus, it’s free. Meanwhile, the High Octane Supercar Pack adds three new supercars and a new livery for the Ryback Cyclone. The High Octane Supercar DLC isn’t free, but it’s pretty close, clocking in at 160 MSP or $2 on Xbox Live and PSN, respectively.

Both DLC packs should be available today on Xbox Live, though currently only the Supercar Pack is listed (along with an unannounced Ryback Cyclone Special Edition pack). The Livery and Supercar DLC are slated to… Continue reading

Dance! It’s Your Stage gets crunk on XBLA Sept. 8

Plants versus what now?” is what you’ll be saying on September 8 when XBLA plays host to Dance! It’s Your Stage, a port of a German Wii game developed by Sproing. According to the dev’s website, you’ll “practice 20 unique choreographies and dance your way up from the Street Stage all the way to the TV Studio” all under the watchful eye of Detlef D! Soost, who’s basically like our favorite German dancer/choreographer.

So you can keep your wonderful, wonderful game, PopCap. We plan on being a little busy dropping $10 for a reason to dust off our DDR mats and churn out some dance butter. (That’s something the kids are saying now, right? Churning out dance butter?… Continue reading

New Xbox 360 controller with twist-up D-pad coming Nov. 9, bundled with charge kit for $65

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

It’s the Xbox controller with a twist! As indicated by our source, Microsoft has announced a redesigned Xbox 360 wireless controller. The new gamepad will debut in a matte silver color with gray-toned face buttons and analog sticks with a more dramatic concave shape. Key to the new design is a “transforming” D-pad that changes from a semi-flush disc to a pop-out plus sign by twisting the D-pad clockwise. (Check out Major Nelson demonstrating the transformation in the video after the break.)

Microsoft offers this suggestion for how you might use the two D-pad configurations: “Select the traditional plus for distinct cardinal direction movement in games like Halo: Reach to change weapons and perform complicated combinations and deadly finishing… Continue reading

Canon XF100 and XF105 Announced, Due Early 2011

Fun Photo App Treehouse Has The Simple Sharing Mechanic That Facebook Needs

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

What I want is simple: a way to share certain things with my friends, and other things with everyone. “Simple” is the keyword there because you can do that with Facebook, but it’s not simple enough. I want flick-one-switch simple, not create list, use drop-down, choose Everyone or Friends and Networks, Friends of Friends, Friends Only, Customize simple. A few startups are starting to get this level of ease — Treehouse is one of them.
When we last wrote about Treehouse back in June, I noted that it was perhaps the perfect app for sharing Bros Icing Bros pictures. Sadly, that meme died at the hands of Smirnoff Ice. But luckily, Treehouse has become even more useful since then. Notably… Continue reading

Better Know The Words: TuneWiki Game Combines Song Lyrics With Tap Tap Revenge

Earlier this year, mobile developer TuneWiki raised over $7 million to expand beyond the namesake lyric-centric music player that put it on the map. Today sees the company’s first major expansion with the launch of a new iPhone game called Lyric Legend, which combines lyrics with the rhythmic gameplay that made Tapulous’s Tap Tap Revenge a massive hit.
Playing Lyric Legend is pretty straightforward: fire up a song and you’ll see a series of bubbles appear on the screen, each with a different word on it. The song you’ve selected will start playing in the background, and it’s your job to tap each word as it’s sung. There are some bonus tricks involved (you hold your… Continue reading

Neighbortree Raises $120k For Hyperlocal Community Websites Network

Lee el post completo en la fuente original

Kansas City-based startup Neighbortree checked in to tell us about their efforts to grow a fledgling network of hyper-local neighborhood community websites operated by residents. The company has just raised $120,000 from an undisclosed regional angel investment firm, notably a mere month after launching its service.
Neighbortree provides free, interactive neighborhood websites to any type of residential community, including traditional neighborhoods, subdivisions, condominiums and apartment buildings. Think of it as a sort of Ning for neighborhoods.
Since this requires a hyper-local approach (we’re talking physical, not virtual communities), its business depends on developing partnerships with other companies that can execute its network model at the metro or state level. The startup says most of the angel funding will be allocated towards… Continue reading

Subway To Get Its Own "Ring Of Steel"

Now that we know the NYPD actually uses subway surveillance footage when it’s available, transit officials say they plan on ordering 340 subway cars equipped for surveillance cameras. Though the move will cost around $750 million, officials told the Post it’s cheaper than installing camera systems in the current cars. So this is what those $130 MetroCards would pay for.

The cars will replace the aging trains on the A line by 2015. However, the camera feeds would not be monitored in real time. Instead, law enforcement officials would be able to watch the footage after a crime or emergency has occurred. MTA spokesman Paul Fleuranges said that they would… Continue reading

De Blasio Hopes New Slumlord Watchlist Shames Landlords

Yesterday, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio launched a new online slumlord watchlist, in an attempt to hold landlords accountable in a way they never have been before. “When you or I get a parking ticket, we have to pay. When a landlord gets a violation for a health and safety problem, they ignore it in many cases and then they ignore it and then they ignore it again,” he told the Daily News.

Helena Wong, who works with tenants as director of CAAV Organizing Asian Communities, agrees about a lack of consequences: “They use loopholes to delay the process. They say, ‘Okay, I’ll fix it, I’ll fix it,’ and they even sign an agreement saying they’ll fix… Continue reading

Colorful Sights From the 234th Anniversary of Battle of Brooklyn

It was strange, it was messy, and it was the first battle of the American Revolution following the Declaration of Independence. Most people also call it the Battle of Long Island. To a group of re-enactors and enthusiasts, as well as other proud Brooklynites, however, it’s called the Battle of Brooklyn, thank you very much, and on Sunday, the yearly re-enactors’ event that celebrates its place in history came around once again in Green-Wood Cemetery. It was a beautiful (if hot) day, and, if nothing else, this is way more interesting than the ol’ back-and-forth between Hasids and hipsters. Check out those uniforms!

While New York City may have some of the best tap water ever, it may not be kosher. When the water was tested in 2004, it set off an alarm in the Orthodox community because results showed tiny crustaceans known as copepods in it. At the time, Rabbi Abraham Zimmerman said, “We hope the city will do something to purify and filter the water to accommodate a few hundred thousand Orthodox, observant Jews.”

Now Gizmodo brings the microscopic creatures into focus again, posting photos that will make you squirm with every sip of tap you take. The… Continue reading

Pre-K Spots Hard To Come By In Brooklyn

This year, over 112 public schools placed students on wait lists for their kindergarten programs, and last year the Daily News reported that getting into many Brooklyn pre-K programs were “tougher to get into than Harvard.” Now, the News says getting into Brooklyn pre-K is even tougher than that.

The News reports that the economy has discouraged parents from putting their children in expensive private pre-Ks, but more and more parents are either moving to Brooklyn or staying there to raise their kids. As Joyce Szuflita of NYC School Help puts it, “It’s a perfect storm for prekindergarten. There are more kids than ever, but not enough seats.” This year Brooklyn’s District 15, which includes Park Slope, Carroll… Continue reading

When it comes to fines, the Prospect Park Enforcement Patrol officers are slack on summonsing litterbugs, but have no problem ticketing an unleashed pup. And now according to the Brooklyn Paper, they turn a blind eye to law-breaking fishermen as well.

The city has a “catch and release” law when it comes to fishing in the parks, but one local whistleblower—Shelley Hendlin—says they aren’t enforcing it in the Brooklyn park. Last Sunday she saw a man reeling in fish from the lake and stashing them by his side. When she she told him to empty his bag into the lake, he did—but the 45 fish were all already dead.

So, if the Muslims own that property, that private property, and they want to build a mosque there, they should have the right to do so.
