Continue reading

Electronic Sunglasses Use Glare Shield to Block the Sun
Sunglasses may not be the fashion trend they used to be (that may not be a bad thing), but that’s not stopping one designer from giving the sunglasses a brand new way from stopping the sun from invading your eyes. Instead of coating the entire lens of your sunglasses, designer Chris Mullin wants to be able to focus on the sun directly, and use what he calls a Glare Shield to keep the sunlight out of your eye, but without dimming everything else you’re looking at, too.
Mullin calls the glasses the “Electronic Sunglasses.” They use a Glare Shield to prevent bright lights, from artificial sources to the sun, from assaulting your eyes. They do this in real-time, with a “pixel” that… Continue reading
PC shipment growth downgraded over iPad popularity says Gartner
Gartner has downgraded its predictions for worldwide PC shipments in 2010, after deciding that strong tablet sales will eat into the traditional PC segment. Having tipped 17.9-percent growth for the year back in September, Gartner has reduced that down to 14.3-percent; still, at 352.4m units, an increase over 2009′s figures, but also recognizing that there is “growing user interest in media tablets such as the iPad.”
It’s not likely to be a trend we’ll see reversing any time soon, Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal suggests. “These results reflect marked reductions in expected near-term unit growth based on expectations of weaker consumer demand,” the analyst claims, before going on to predict that “over the longer term, media tablets are expected to… Continue reading
Windows Phone 7 private beta group app testing coming to Marketplace
Microsoft is adding private beta group support to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, allowing developers to do limited testing of their applications before submitting for full app store inclusion. The incoming functionality was announced at Microsoft’s BizSpark UK, according to Richard Hyndman, and should make testing software for the fledgling OS more straightforward.
The news will be welcomed by developers who have had to use unofficial tools such as ChevronWP7 to sideload applications onto jailbroken handsets in order to conduct broader testing of alpha-stage apps. Last week, Microsoft announced that it had 3,000 applications already in the WP7 Market, and 15,000 developers coding for the platform.
SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: November 29 2010

Many of you’ve got your new Android smartphones and giant televisions and weirdo oddities under your belt (or maybe you had even more fun by buying those things as presents) and you’ve come back, hungry for some tech news! Well you’re in luck, especially if you DIDN’T pick up your device of choice yet, especially if you live in Korea (where you’ll find the LG LU3000, faster than Galaxy S, – that is of course if you dismiss the fact that you might be going to war soon,) in Japan (where Sharp is very soon releasing their fabulous Galapagos tablets,) or the USA (where you can get a FREE G2.) FCC Net Neutrality vote scheduled for December 21?
The FCC has postponed its next hearing by more than two weeks, pushing the next scheduled meeting from December 2 to December 21 and prompting speculation that the agency is readying itself for a vote on net neutrality. According to InformationWeek, the three Democratic commissioners on the board are likely to vote for “consumer-friendly regulation” while their two Republican counterparts will be pushing for “relatively unfettered oversight favoring industry players.”
The vote could have significant impact on the nature of the internet service users in the US experience. Already the Court of Appeals of Washington has ruled in Comcast’s favor over a cease and desist order imposed by the FCC in April 2010, after the ISP throttled video bandwidth… Continue reading
Windows Phone 7 outsold by Android 15:1 in UK suggests retailer
With Microsoft still refusing to provide Windows Phone 7 sales figures, retailers are stepping in with their own anecdotal evidence about the new smartphone platform’s market success – or lack of it. UK store deal aggregator MobilesPlease has announced that Windows Phone 7 has accounted for just 3-percent of their smartphone sales, with Android devices outselling WP7 handsets 15:1 and even Symbian doing a good job of eclipsing Microsoft.
In fact, the site reckons that Symbian devices outsold Windows Phone 7 handsets by 3:1, with the Nokia N8 predominantly responsible for those numbers – that’s one device outselling a range of multiple WP7 devices from a variety of manufacturers. They also sourced some anecdotal feedback from other UK retailers… Continue reading
Microsoft Smart TV in negotiations tip insiders
Microsoft is reportedly considering a Smart TV platform of its own, with sources claiming that the software giant has been negotiating with TV networks for an online, subscription-based service that could work through the Xbox 360. According to Reuter‘s two sources, Microsoft is evaluating setting up as a “virtual cable operator” with web delivery, or alternatively using the Xbox to “authenticate existing cable subscribers to watch shows with enhanced interactivity,” perhaps offering interactive adverts or extras.
Another alternative under consideration is offering individual channels – such as HBO or Showtime – for online rental, likely viewed as part of Xbox Live. While rival platforms such as Google TV and Apple TV have struggled to… Continue reading

Nintendo: 900K DS units, 600K Wiis sold during Black Friday week
Nintendo revealed this morning that US consumers gobbled up 1.5 million pieces of the company’s hardware over the Black Friday week of November 21 - 27. According to internal estimates, 900,000 DS units (over the entire DS “family”) and 600,000 Wiis were sold.

Gran Turismo 5 starts at pole position in UK sales chart
Gran Turismo 5 raced into first place on the UK sales chart last week, becoming the sixth largest PS3 launch ever in the region. Call of Duty: Black Ops and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood both took one step back this week, grabbing silver and bronze, respectively. CoD:Blops dropped another 42 percent in sales two weeks after its record-setting premiere, while AC:B slipped off a Borgia tower, but caught itself 32 percent of the way down.

Japanese hardware sales, Nov. 15 - Nov. 21: Innovative edition
This week, two pieces of gaming hardware saw major boosts in Media Create’s Japanese sales charts for one central developmental philosophy: Innovation. For example, the 360 got a 229 percent boost in sales on the back of the launch of the innovative, motion-sensing Kinect, which moved 26,000 units during its first two days on Japanese store shelves. That’s an increase of 4,934 Xbox 360s sold, most of which likely came from the Kinect console bundles which launched alongside the device.
The PSP, on the other hand, saw a 139 percent increase up to 96,601 units sold, largely due to the fact that Monster Hunter Portable 3rd’s Japanese release is less than a week away. Now, you may be wondering… Continue reading

Well, here’s another reason for us to be jealous of our up-north cohorts — for tomorrow only, Canadian tech retailer Future Shop is letting shoppers trade in six Wii, 360 or PS3 games for a 32-inch Dynex LCD TV, which normally retails for $300, which is absolutely crazy.Continue reading Trade in six games at Future Shop tomorrow, get a 32-inch LCD TVTrade in six games at Future Shop tomorrow, get a 32-inch LCD TV originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 28 Nov 2010 21:00:00 EST. Kinect hacked into Super Mario Bros. emulator controller
YouTube user Yankeyan recently showed off one of the cleverest Kinect hacks we’ve seen to date: He’s managed to use the motion-sensing gadget to control Super Mario Bros. 1 - 3 on an NES emulator. Well, he kind of controls it. We’ve never seen anyone work so hard to grab that first mushroom before.Continue reading Kinect hacked into Super Mario Bros. emulator controllerKinect hacked into Super Mario Bros. emulator controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 28 Nov 2010 19:30:00 EST. Swords and Soldiers marching onto Steam December 1
Romino Games has hinted at a PC release of its sidescrolling strategy title (man, it still feels weird to type that combination of genres) Swords and Soldiers since it first launched on WiiWare last June. Apparently, it firmed up the game’s PC release plans over the weekend — Steam is currently listing the game’s launch date as this coming Wednesday, December 1.
No pricing information was included on the game’s info page, though we imagine it will resemble the game’s $10 price point on Wii. Unless, of course, the PC port is infused with an additional helping of MoreFun — we wouldn’t mind paying a small surcharge for an extra shot of that vitally important attribute.Swords
Fivepoint gloves – Because regular gloves get in the way of your tech
It’s already that time of year again, the chill in the air, all the leaves off the trees and the temperature dipping past the freezing mark. I love the cold weather and I look forward to the holidays, but geez, I hate how gloves just seem to get in the way of everything. I cant use my smartphone without taking them off. My iPod, forget it, and my camera.. I’ve missed many a shot because I was to darn cold to take my gloves off to set up the picture properly on the touch-screen.
Well I have just the thing for you, and just in time for winter. Fivepoint gloves, with specially-designed conductive fingertips, they let you type and… Continue reading

Color Wonder Sound Studio – Coloring goes high tech
Ah the primary school rite of passage, coloring. How I remember the importance of a neatly colored page and my teachers gentle suggestions that I stay within the lines and the pride I felt when my “artwork” made it to the front of the refrigerator.
I remember the thrill of a box of crayons containing *gasp* 4 different shades of blue.
Well the time has come to put away childish things, because even coloring has gone electronic.
Crayola, the folks that bring you the mess free Color Wonder series of products have taken things up a notch with the Color Wonder Sound Studio that can bring your child’s drawings to life with interactive sounds.
The drawing board works with Color Wonder paper… Continue reading
PhotoFast – A new wireless audio solution for your car
I love my iPod, and I especially love my music collection, what I don’t love is trying to listen to my iPod in the car. I hate driving with earbuds and my stupid little portable speaker just doesn’t cut it. But since the introduction of Airplay, Apple’s new streaming technology that allows audio (photos and video) to be streamed from any iOS device to another iOS device, I knew good things were about to happen.
Enter PhotoFast, the newest way to listen to your tunes, the way you want to, in your car. After what appears to be a somewhat labor intensive, although pretty straightforward installation, this cool little black WIFI box will automatically turn on when you start… Continue reading

Cruz Storypad – Animated e-Reader for tots
It’s amazing how quickly kids grow up these days. the one thing that strikes me is just how much our kids want to be like us. It’s not always a good thing, I mean my 7 year old wants to wear makeup and have a cell phone. But there’s a product about to hit the market that might work to a parents advantage.
The Cruz Storypad is a full color, animated, touchscreen interface storybook e-reader for kids. It can also play, music, pictures, videos and games, making it a fully blown personal entertainment device.
Easy to use, with intuitive controls and made with kids in mind, in other words, durable and spill resistant. With a full color display and 1… Continue reading
Persuasion Triggers in Web Design
How do you make decisions? If you’re like most people, you’ll probably answer that you pride yourself on weighing the pros and cons of a situation carefully and then make a decision based on logic. You know that other people have weak personalities and are easily swayed by their emotions, but this rarely happens to you. You’ve just experienced the fundamental attribution error — the tendency to believe that other people’s behaviour is due to their personality (“Josh is late because he’s a disorganised person”) whereas our behaviour is due to external circumstances (“I’m late because the directions were useless”).Cognitive biases like these play a significant role in the way we make decisions… Continue reading
Art Inspiration For The Weekend
In a creative field like design, we face an undeniable truth: our wells of inspiration are bound to run dry from time to time. In those periods of imaginative downtime, we seek out sources that can help us return the creative flow to our working process, and get us “back in the game.” But when we need a quick recharge, where do we turn? Many of us have our favorite “go-to” places when we are victim to creative drought, though perhaps with a little help, our routinely chosen paths could change.Although they are so different in their purpose, art and design have such a close relationship; extensive discussions, over the years, have tried… Continue reading
Welcome back after an extended holiday weekend! Many of you’ve got your new Android smartphones and giant televisions and weirdo oddities under your belt (or maybe you had even more fun by buying those things as presents) and you’ve come back, hungry for some tech news! Well you’re in luck, especially if you DIDN’T pick up your device of choice yet, especially if you live in Korea (where you’ll find the LG LU3000, faster than Galaxy S, – that is of course if you dismiss the fact that you might be going to war soon,) in Japan (where Sharp is very soon releasing their fabulous Galapagos tablets,) or the USA (where you can get a FREE G2.) Of course, if you’re… Continue reading
FCC Net Neutrality vote scheduled for December 21?

Verizon Buys #CyberMonday From Twitter
It looks like Verizon has bought the promoted trend “#CyberMonday” to mark the Monday after Black Friday and Thanksgiving when consumers look to the web for exclusive holiday deals. This buy follows another significant Promoted Trend this past Friday, when Target bought “#BlackFriday” on Twitter.
As with any purchased Promoted Trend on Twitter, when users click on CyberMonday, they will be see a sponsored Tweet from Verizon, which states “Starting today, Verizon’s giving you 24 days of Seasonal Surprises! Unwrap an exclusive deal now!” The Tweet contains a link to the company’s “Seasonal Surprises” campaign, which encourages users to Tweet Verizon’s message or post the message on Facebook to unlock an exclusive deal.

MyYearbook Introduces Realtime Social Gaming With Video Chat
In general, the key driver of social networking so far is games on Facebook. But most of those games aren’t social in the way that playing Monopoly or cards with your friends and family over the holidays is social. MyYearbook, which is a small but profitable social network focussing on younger teenage users, is going to try to make online games more social by getting its members to play together at the same time. The site has 4.7 million active visitors a month generating nearly 1 billion pageviews. It has about 1 million active users every day who spend a third of their time playing games and using other apps. The company makes its… Continue reading

Contest: Happy Cyber Monday, Here’s A Portable TV
I remember, back in the old days, there wasn’t much on TV during family holiday dinners and we wished we could play Nintendo. We’d go out to my Uncle’s house in Martin’s Ferry, Ohio and we’d watch whatever was on their old CRT – maybe the Yule log on QVC or the same old holiday specials over and over, and we’d dream about playing the NES on that big old box. But we couldn’t. It was too much trouble and the adults, after all, were hopped up on lasagna and beer.
Well I’m here to tell you that this won’t happen to my kids. And it won’t happen to your kids. They’ll get something like this 7-inch portable TV with multiple… Continue reading
Gartner: PC Shipments Up 14 Percent, 409 Million Computers To Be Sold In 2011
Gartner’s preliminary forecasts point to a 14.3 increase in PC shipments in 2010 over 2009 as well as a forecast of 409 million PCs sold in 2011. While these numbers are exciting to anyone following the sad-sack IT industry, remember that Gartner estimated 17.9 percent growth in last September for the end of 2010 and 18.1 percent growth for 2011. Clearly “not too bad” is good enough these days.
The report also found that folks are holding on to PCs longer because “because there will be less need to replace them as often” and that there is an increase in thin clients in the enterprise. PCs are also getting it in the knees because Western consumers are deciding to buy tablets… Continue reading

The round is said to be only the first in a multi-stage investment to provide CloudBees with the resources to build out a cloud-agnostic, cloud-native Java PaaS that covers both development services and a production runtime for Java.
Facebook App Scam Promises To Reveal Who Checked Out Your Profile
Over 60,000 people have been hit in the past few hours on Facebook by a scam which claims that after installing an app called ePrivacy you can see who checked your profile. Needless to say the app does not work. Instead it just lets the scammer access your profile and post “OMG OMG OMG… I cant believe this actually works!” to your wall, with a link to the app, thus spreading it further.
Sophos is reporting that the application does not work and simply allows the makers to steal your private data and virally spread the app amongst your friends.
John Doerr and Mary Meeker Speak about their New Partnership
Venture capital mega-firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has announced that Mary Meeker is joining the firm as a partner, in another sign that the firm is focusing more on this wave of mobile-meets-social-meets-local-meets-global wave of Web disruption. “Our number one goal is to help the Mark Pincuses of the world build their businesses into Internet treasures, and there has been no greater finder of Internet treasures than Mary Meeker,” said KP’s John Doerr in an early morning call with TechCrunch, just after Meeker broke the news to Morgan Stanley’s technology and Internet practice– a force on Wall Street where she’s made her name over the last 20 years.

New European Startup Programme Resembles Y-Combinator Model
So we have Seedcamp, Startup Bootcamp, The Founder Institute, Launch48, Hackfwd and various other startup programme across Europe. And we can now add another to that list: Springboard.
But this is not the Springboard we wrote about last year. Then, it was the brainchild of Red Gate Software who were effectively offering a very informal arrangement, helping young startups. It was also B2B focused.
This is a different beast. The new Springboard programme has wisely realised that there is a gap in the European eco-system for the super-early stage startup that really just needs enough cash to create something. That is in the Y-Combinator and TechStars sort of area, which is much more at the hacker/product end of the… Continue reading

Continue reading

Rangel Makes Plea For Lighter Punishment
Rep. Charles Rangel, the 40-year veteran of the House, is hoping to avoid censure for the ethics violations related to multiple rent-stabilized apartments, bad financial accounting, trying to solicit donations for the graduate school being named after him at City College, and more. The House is supposed to vote on whether to censure him this week, and he has reportedly been seeking time to speak to colleagues before the vote.
Formal censure is the most damning punishment short of expulsion the House can offer, and sources say Rangel is arguing that his actions only merit a reprimand. (According to Politico, “These… Continue reading
Black Should Get State Approval Any Second Now
Now that Mayor Bloomberg has accepted state Education Commissioner David Steiner’s suggestion that city Schools Chancellor appointee Cathie Black serve with a second-in-command more familiar with the education system, there seems to be nothing keeping him from granting the waiver that would allow her to serve. Except for those possible restraining orders. Steiner is expected to grant the waiver as early as today, but now more opponents are threatening legal action if she is granted the position.

Yeshiva Needs 540 Dreidel Spinners To Break World Record
Chanukah, everyone’s favorite not-really-a-high-holiday-but-let’s-treat-it-like-one-anyway holiday, starts on December 2nd, bringing with it all the thrills of playing dreidel. And two Yeshiva University students are trying to make the game about more than just cheating your cousins out of all their gelt. Tomorrow’s “Dreidelpalooza,” organized by two Yeshiva University students, will attempt to draw over 540 dreidel spinners to get the whole thing into the Guinness Book of World Records.
The event will also raise money for the school. Organizer Jason Katz told the Daily News, “It’s something everybody who’s involved can tell their kids, tell their grandkids - I was part of a world record.” It goes down tomorrow evening at the Max Stern Athletic Center… Continue reading
NYC’s Got A New Subway Hero
The digital countdown clocks in the subway stations served a new purpose yesterday, when 36-year-old Carlos Flores used one to check how much time he had to save a man who had fallen on to the tracks. Happy Monday everyone, we have a new subway hero! According to the Daily News, Flores was waiting for the downtown 6 train at 103rd Street at 8 a.m. yesterday when he saw a man (who allegedly fainted) sprawled over the tracks. He told the paper, “I was thinking, if he gets hit I can’t go to work. It’s Sunday. I can’t miss out. It’s a time-and-a-half day.” (His job at a NoHo grocery store, where he’s a produce clerk, gets… Continue reading
Manhattan Beach Fences Begin To Wobble
A new (old) beach way for Brooklyn? The Post reports that local leaders are setting their sights on reopening the Manhattan Beach esplanade. Though the seven-block stretch has been around since the 1800s it has has been closed off to non-shorefront homeowners since a 1993 court order, and has been a point of contention since 1987 when one property owner, the late Jack Laboz, blocked access to the concrete walkway with a six-foot fence (that’d be what you see above).
The current push to bring back access to the beach East of Brighton comes with the city’s ongoing Vision 2020 push to revitalize the waterfront (other plans recreational access to other beaches and the return of ferry… Continue reading
