RIM hit with BBM trademark lawsuit

RIM has been hit with another trademark-related lawsuit. The company has already surrendered its efforts in using BBX for its QNX-based BlackBerry 10 platform, but this time around the target is its use of BBM for its BlackBerry Messenger service.

A non-profit business intelligence company called BBM (Bureau of Broadcast Management) Canada is bringing the case against RIM. The company has been in business since 1944, gathering TV and radio metrics for advertising and its CEO Jim MacLeod had previously approached RIM, offering to rebrand if RIM would cover the cost.
Negotiations fell through and BBM Canada filed its suit on August 12 with the initial hearing scheduled for January 11. McLeod says “we want our name back.” The BBM name… Continue reading

Sony Tablet S, Tablet P getting Android 4.0 update

Sony recently posted some good news for Tablet S and Tablet P owners, confirming that the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will indeed be rolling out to both devices. The news was posted in Sony UK’s community forums, but the company hasn’t confirmed yet when this update will arrive.

Both devices feature unique form factors with the Tablet S being a 10-inch device that resembles a folded back magazine while the Tablet P sports a smaller more pocketable clam shell design. Both devices come with a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

iOS dominates 92% of mobile online shopping

Google’s Android may be leading the US smartphone market, but when it comes to mobile online shopping, Apple’s iOS dominates. According to a study by retail analysis firm RichRelevance, 92 percent of mobile online sales in 2011 came from iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad.

The study looked at 3.4 billion shopping sessions between April and December 2011, during which iOS mobile online shopping grew from 88 percent to 92 percent of the market. The average order value of purchases made from iOS devices was also higher than those made on other platforms, averaging $123 in December versus $101 on Android and $87 on desktops.

Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab will not be getting Android 4.0

Samsung has revealed that its Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab 7-inch tablet will not be getting the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. The company explained that the devices could not be updated due to hardware limitations that would not be able to run the new Android platform alongside Samsung’s custom TouchWiz user interface.

The explanation, however, seems inconsistent since the Android 4.0 update is already being rolled out to Samsung’s Nexus S, which features similar internal hardware. The Galaxy S packs the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor and enough memory for ICS.

ASUS expects to ship 3-6 million tablets in 2012

Despite reported WiFi signal problems with the ASUS Transformer Prime tablet, ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih is optimistic about his company’s tablet shipments for next year. He expects that ASUS will ship three to six million tablets in 2012, a major boost up from the estimated 1.8 million units in 2011.

Shih believes that the ASUS Transformer Prime tablet will be especially popular with consumers because of its unique physical keyboard hardware. The detachable keyboard design is patent pending and the company plans to continue optimizing the technology.
Furthermore, ASUS plans to introduce new Transformer tablets next year that run the Windows 8 platform. Shih believes that with Windows 8, tablets will be able to address both consumers’ “data consumption” and “data creation”… Continue reading

VVVVVV arrives on the 3DS eShop on December 29

Terry Cavanagh’s great platformer VVVVVV is heading to a 3DS near you as promised: The game has been set for release on the Nintendo eShop next week. Starting December 29, you’ll be able to grab the game (published by Nicalis, the company behind Cave Story and its various iterations) for a price of $7.99 on your 3DS, and take on the game’s many frustrating yet ingenious challenges for yourself.

Or, if you’ve never played the title before, you could go try out the free Flash version, or play it on PC or Mac as you wish. It’s a great and well-made experience for sure, but bring all of the patience you have. You’ll need it.

Iwata Claus drops a holiday Nintendo Direct Dec. 26

In October, Satoru Iwata hosted a “Nintendo Direct” video, in which he introduced the pink 3DS, detailed the big firmware update, and gave release windows for some eShop releases. Iwata will host another video press conference on December 27 at noon JST, or 10PM EST on December 26, according to a new “event” set up on the publisher’s Ustream site. This time, we suspect we’ll learn release dates — or windows — for at least some of its big upcoming releases, like Luigi’s Mansion 2, Mario Tennis, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, or Paper Mario.

Feast of Fiction debuts with Skyrim’s ‘Sunlight Souffle’

We’ve already walked you through The Gourmet’s signature dish, the Potage le Magnifique, but did you know there’s another recipe found within his book, Uncommon Taste? A new show called Feast of Fiction has debuted on YouTube, and in its first episode the duo creates The Gourmet’s other Skyrim dish, the Sunlight Souffle.

They’re hardly the first group to cook in-game dishes — Gourmet Gaming has been around for a while now — but it’s still novel. The Sunlight Souffle doesn’t look too difficult, and the video above does a pretty good job of breaking down the recipe into easy-to-follow steps. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine will receive a “big metal surprise” in January, according to the game’s official Twitter feed. Game Informer took note of the tweet and its accompanying picture of a space marine (SPACE MARINE!) serving the eternal will of The Emperor against a Dreadnought.

As fans of the Warhammer 40K universe and Relic’s Dawn of War RTS know, the Dreadnought is actually a battle sarcophagus, where the barely living body of an invaluable warrior is entombed to live out existence in the massive armed mech.

Los cupones descuento también hay que “pensarlos”

Esta mañana he estado a punto de comprar unos cupones descuento para un restaurante nuevo por el que paso todos los días. La oferta era de 8 euros por cada menú diario, con un descuento de 6. Justo paso a las pocas horas por el local, menos mal sin haber comprado los cupones y el menú anunciado suponía un descuento de solo 3 euros, es decir, que cuesta 11. Conclusión: ni cupones para ir, ni acudir al local de forma convencional y pagar por la vía normal, ya que cuando algo te genera dudas, dudas de todo. U.U., por la transparencia en la Política, ha publicado ayer este gráfico con cifras, muy demostrativo del poder que tiene el sector del entretenimiento comparado con el tecnológico, en relación a la financiación de lobbys.
