SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up: February 1, 2012
This morning we must cross our hearts and say goodbye to the sinking pirate ship – or its crew, anyway, as the Swedish Supreme Court has rejected the final appeal of the Pirate Bay. On a more positive note, Sony has named Kaz Hirai their new President and CEO. His biggest challenge will be to sell us four screens, so says Chris Davies.
It’s possible that this image represents the future of BlackBerry 10. As far as everyone who uses their smartphone on the pot, Android takes the cake. There’s a little board out there called PunkThis by CUPP Computing that’ll put Android on any laptop. We’re one step closer… Continue reading
Dropcam HD Review
Webcams aren’t new, and WiFi isn’t new, but it’s taken a while for WiFi-enabled video streaming cameras to come down to a level where remote home surveillance is reasonably affordable. Dropcam’s second-gen offering, the Dropcam HD, is a compact webcam with integrated wireless network connectivity, together with a suite of online and smartphone apps that all link up with the company’s cloud-based backbone. We’ve been under the watchful eye of the Dropcam HD; check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.
Hardware
Dropcam’s is rightly proud of the HD: its first-gen hardware, the Echo, was designed externally, but the company brought development in-house for this new model. The end result is something that looks far more consumer-friendly than the blocky white Echo… Continue reading
Apple iPad 3 leak tips global LTE and quadcore A6
Apple’s iPad 3 will use the quadcore Apple A6 chipset and offer a combination GSM/CDMA/LTE radio, according to a new leak from a source claiming to have access to the next-gen tablet itself. Details of the third-generation iOS slate were culled via debutting tool iBoot, BGR‘s source suggests, with the same J1 and J2 model references as spotted in an iOS beta, now believed to refer to the WiFi-only and WiFi + 3G/4G variants.
The Apple A6 processor, meanwhile, has the model number S5L8945X. Details on the A6 have not been released by Apple, but the chipset is expected to have not only four cores but upgraded graphics capabilities driving a “Retina Display” panel running at 2048 x 1536 resolution. Despite their… Continue reading
Windows 8 has tablet advantage over Android says ARM chief
ARM processors and Microsoft’s Windows may not be commonly found cohabiting the same device, but ARM CEO Warren East reckons Windows 8 could have the edge over Android in tablets thanks to the platform’s brand recognition. “Consumers are familiar with Microsoft and very familiar with Windows and they’re less familiar with an Android environment” East said during the company’s financial results call this week, CNET reports. “Microsoft has an awareness advantage with consumers that the Android folks didn’t have.”
Nonetheless, East believes Android manufacturers do still stand a chance of making a mark on the tablet segment, it’s just that they need a little more time to build momentum. “When Android phones were introduced, there… Continue reading
Apple in Smart TV component negotiations tips analyst
Apple television obsessed analyst Gene Munster claims the Cupertino company has entered negotiations with a “major TV component supplier” over the possibility of using its parts for the much-rumored smart TV. The supplier itself is unnamed, but the Piper Jaffray analyst claims to have been informed by employees that Apple had been in contact “regarding various capabilities of their television display components.”
The leak, Munster reckons, is ”continued evidence that Apple is exploring production of a television,” something the analyst has been talking about since 2010. All signs point to a potential 2012 release, Munster predicts, with the Apple television believed to use the Siri voice control system that debuted on the iPhone 4S.
Siri integration – using… Continue reading
Hirai’s Big Challenge: Selling us Four Sony Screens
Freshly-appointed Sony CEO Kaz Hirai faces the difficult challenge of delivering on predecessor Howard Stringer’s ambitious four-screen strategy: convincing users to buy not just one Sony device, but as many as four of them. Stringers’ grand design – of tablets, TVs, smartphones phones and computers all interacting – is an determined attempt to follow Apple’s lead of a tightly integrated ecosystem of content sharing across devices
Hirai’s promotion has led to a small bout of executive shuffles. Most notable is the company’s new Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President Tadashi Saito, who until now has been President of Sony’s Semiconductor Business Group and Deputy President of the Professional, Device & Solutions Group. Although little has been said about… Continue reading
Microsoft “Putting People First” adverts targets Google fears
Microsoft has launched an anti-Google campaign, suggesting its rival’s privacy policy changes “make it harder, not easier, for people to stay in control of their own information” and arguing Hotmail, Bing and Internet Explorer are better options. “Putting People First” is Microsoft’s somewhat opportunistic attack on the search giant, a series of newspaper adverts alleging that, despite Google’s claim that it’s gathering no more data than before, in reality the changes are designed to increase “how valuable you at to an advertiser.”
“Every data point Google collects and connects to you increases how valuable you are to an advertiser” Microsoft argues. “To be clear, there’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to improve the quality of an advertising product… Continue reading
MSI unveils new AMD R7950 video cards
MSI has unveiled three new video cards that all use the AMD R7950 GPU inside. One of the three new cards also use the special MSI Twin Frozr cooling solution to help the GPU run up to 10°C cooler while producing 13.7 dB less noise than traditional cooling systems. Improved cooling allows for more overclocking potential.
In fact, MSI claims that you get 37.5% higher overclocks using its special cooling solution. The card uses the special cooling solution is called the R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC. The other two graphics cards use traditional cooling systems and are called the R7970-2PMD3GD5/OC and the R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC. The cards all use similar hardware components.
The components used on the Twin Frozr video card are military class III… Continue reading
MegaUpload users offered data lifeline with EFF’s MegaRetrieval
MegaUpload users with non-copyright infringing content trapped on the sized file-sharing site’s servers could have a lifeline, with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and one of MegaUpload’s hosts exploring data rescue possibilities. Frustration at the site’s downtime turned to panic last week, when reports from US prosecutors suggested MegaUpload’s inability to pay hosting bills would see data deleted. Not so, hosts Cogent Communications Group and Carpathia Hosting have since said, and now Carpathia and the EFF have launched MegaRetrieval.
“Megaupload, of course, had many lawful customers … Yet those people were given no notice that they might lose access to their data and no clear path to getting their property back. Setting aside the legal case against Megaupload, the… Continue reading
Strange objects found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea create a stir
The Captain and crew of an ocean salvaging operation made an interesting find in the Baltic Sea, which was apparently originally discovered by a company called Ocean Explorer. The new crew is a company specializing in deep-sea salvage, and it appears that they have happened on the same wreck that the Ocean Explorer company found a while back. I recall the photo having surfaced previously because it looks a lot like the Millennium Falcon to me. The team has no idea what the object they discovered using deep-sea side sonar might be.
The first images that the crew captured using their sonar equipment showed a long cylinder shaped object spanning about 400m about 60m in diameter. A second sonar pass found a… Continue reading
Which game development studio head was the top Colbert Super PAC supporter?
There’s one man in the northeastern United States who is way, way into making America a better tomorrow, tomorrow, and that man is Harmonix Music Systems co-founder and CEO Alex Rigopulos. He’s so into it, in fact, that he donated just shy of $10,000 ($9,600) to Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC in 2011, making his the largest financial contribution that the political action committee has received.Colbert’s camp disclosed Rigopulos’ name and info along with many others to the FCC this week in a required move for Super PACs with contributors who donate more than $200. Of the $1,023,121 raised since Colbert launched his Super PAC, Rigopulos’ donation makes up just under 1 percentage point — not… Continue reading

Ghost Trick comes through the phone lines to iOS tomorrow
The iOS version of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, which came out in Japan in December 2010, is finally coming out worldwide. Capcom gave the DS version a year to sell (or not), but the English-language version of the game has already appeared on the New Zealand App Store, typically the first sign of a worldwide release over the course of the next day.Like the Japanese release, this version of Ghost Trick is somewhat episodic. The first two chapters of the supernatural mystery puzzle adventure game (phew) are free, with the rest of the game available as in-app purchases. We had no problem recommending a purchase of the full game on DS; it’s even easier for us… Continue reading
Zynga responds to copycat claims, NimbleBit rebuts
“You should be careful not to throw stones when you live in glass towers,” Zynga head Mark Pincus said in a recent VentureBeat interview, firing back at recent criticisms of his company’s games for being copycat versions of already released games. His cheeky comment is specifically targeted at indie dev NimbleBit, creator of Tiny Tower, who recently wrote an open letter to Zynga addressing similarities between its game and Zynga’s upcoming Facebook title Dream Heights.”When you pull the lens back, you saw that their tower game looked similar to five other tower games going all the way back to SimTower in the early 1990s,” he added. But Pincus’ argument goes beyond cheeky jabs — he also makes the… Continue reading

As of April 1, 2012, Kaz will step up to the job of current CEO Sir Howard Stringer, effectively kicking off two months of vacation for Stringer before he becomes chairman of the board of directors in June 2012.”I look forward to helping Kaz in every way I can so that succession leads inevitably to success,” Stringer said in the announcement press release. Trials: Evolution leaked (but not by RedLynx this time)
Despite a past precedent for leaking its own upcoming game in the effort of publicity, Trials franchise dev RedLynx has denied claims that it was behind the recent leak of Trials Evolution. “We want to be clear that is not something we did ourselves,” RedLynx managing director Tero Virtala told Develop.Virtala also challenged pirates who snagged a copy of the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade exclusive. “Trials Evolution is a game that makes full use of being continuously connected,” he pointed out; online-based additions like leaderboards and online multiplayer are unavailable in the leaked version due to Microsoft’s monitoring of hacked Xbox 360s.A recent PEGI rating clued us in that Trials Evolution will launch sometime soon, but… Continue reading

Sid Meier: modern graphics have lowered the barriers of entry to gaming
In this interview with Game Informer, legendary developer Sid Meier says even he has succumbed to the lure of modern graphics. “I used to love to try and challenge the players’ imagination,” he says, “to show them a few pixels in 16 colors and try and convince them that they’re ruling an empire to stand the test of time. But I think today’s player is not really willing to make that investment, so we’re able to bring the worlds to life in 3D.”But he also believes that beefing up the graphics has brought in a much bigger audience than games could have picked up 20 years ago. “You had to kind of suspend your disbelief and be willing… Continue reading
Meet Kingdoms of Amalur devs at GameStop midnight launch events
You may not know this, but most mages and fantasy archetypes don’t get much sleep. If you’re sleeping, who will vanquish all the rats in the town cellars and prevent the animals of the wild from threatening their crops? Who will transport arbitrary items from one town to another? That’s why the planned midnight launch of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning at three different GameStop locations is such an appropriate plan. Curt Schilling and R. A. Salvatore, owner of 38 Studios and the game’s writer, will be on-hand at the Bellingham, MA location. Todd McFarlane, who was in charge of the game’s artistic vision, will be at the Tempe, AZ GameStop to greet fans, while lead designer Ken Rolston… Continue reading
Fans find shiploads of errors in latest Mass Effect novel
Mass Effect: Deception is riddled with canonical errors, fans have found, and they’re not content with letting them go under the guise of “artistic liberty.” Some have started a shared Google document to chronicle every error, and have so far added more than 80 infringements, arranged by “Lore,” “Timeline,” “Characters” and “Oddities,” complete with clarifying descriptions. Some of the most egregious errors include Nick and Gillian aging six years in the three years since Ascension, two volus wearing clothes that would cause their immediate deaths, and [spoiler] “Anderson thinking that the Citadel trap had been sprung ’so successfully’ they were still reparing damage — The entire point of the first game was that you prevented that particular Reaper plan from… Continue reading

What You Must Do To In Order To Sell Your Site
I know on the Chinese calendar 2011 was the year of the Rabbit, but in the online world it was definitely the year of the PANDA!
As most of you are aware, Google unleashed several updates to its algorithm in 2011 to clean up the search results and make them more relevant for the users. As a result, there were thousands, if not millions, of sites that got affected by this for better or for worse. For all the webmasters who make a living online, it was a fun ride to say the least.
As someone who sells sites for a living, I was contacted by hundreds of webmasters who were looking to sell their sites. Pretty
Apple, Foxconn and Chinese Workers – It’s All About Context
The New York Time recently ran a fascinating article on why Apple builds all its stuff in China. This has brought renewed calls about low wages, child labour, working conditions, employee suicides, buy American, boycott Apple, etc.
My question is, why are they focusing on Apple and Foxconn? Apple is not the only company building their stuff in China and Apple is not Foxconn’s only customer. Last time I checked, pretty much every American tech firm builds their stuff in China. Apple is the target simply because they’re the most successful.
Just how bad are working conditions at Foxconn? The following graphic visualisation by Paul Arnett (based on numbers from Frobes.com) should put things in context.
Disclosure – I am… Continue reading

Newport Beach Restaurant Week – The Cannery
Newport Beach Restaurant Week allows you to “Savor the Flavor” of the OC’s best restaurants for a reasonable price (reasonable for Newport Beach anyway). Running for a full nine days and two weekends during January 20th – 29th, this citywide culinary celebration, serves up special prix-fixe gourmet menus that would normally cost you an arm and a leg, but during restaurant week, will cost you only an arm.
The Cannery Restaurant in Newport Beach covers nearly 90 years of history. It started life in 1934 as a real cannery and turned into a seafood restaurant in 1973. Since then, the Cannery has been a place to see and be seen by Orange County’s rich and famous. It’s waterfront location offers a great… Continue reading
Six Practical Tips for Better Blog Content
For all the tutorials available online regarding SEO and marketing techniques, you could be forgiven for forgetting about the true key to successful blogging, quality content. So how do you ensure that your content remains attractive to your readers? I try to keep the following factors in mind when both writing and choosing… Continue reading
Affiliate Summit West 2012 – Shoemoney Keynote
The closing keynote of Affiliate Summit West Las Vegas was delivered by my good friend and enemy (frienemy?) Jeremy Schoemaker of Shoemoney.com. The keynote would be Shoe’s 50th presentation and his last.
I actually recorded the entire presentation and was going to process it with Shoe’s slides, but had to scrap the idea when I found out that recording of any Affiliate Summit sessions were not allowed (this is why the other ASW session videos were removed). Shoe went and got special permission to make the presentation available. He then had a member of his staff processed the video with the slides. That saved me a lot of work.

128k Macintosh prototype spotted?
Old is gold, or so the saying goes. Well, if that is the case, then surely what looks to be a 128k Macintosh prototype that appeared in the wild will certainly appeal to collectors of all things vintage. This unique prototype is very rare, considering how not many people keep old school electronics up and running for a few decades. Boasting a 5.25” “Twiggy” floppy disk mechanism, this is in line with the what Apple used in the first generation Lisa workstation.
According to user “mactwiggy” who put up several photos of this particularly rare find (no idea on where he spotted it though), what makes this prototype all the more unique is this – production Mac models relied on 3.5” 400k… Continue reading
Sony DSC-TX200V digital camera is super slim
Thin is still in where digital cameras are concerned, and while we took a look at a couple of shooters from Panasonic yesterday, Sony too, did not want to lose out on the game, and the Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer has just added yet another model to the ultra-thin Cyber-shot T series – with the model number DSC-TX200V. You might want to look into expanding that external storage space collection of yours if you happen to pick up the new TX200V camera though, considering it is capable of shooting 18.2-megapixel images thanks to its “Exmor R” CMOS sensor.
This would clearly place the Sony DSC-TX200V as the highest-resolution digital camera that is currently on offer in the “point and shoot”… Continue reading

Merry Christmas from the Affiliate Networks
I hope everyone had a good Christmas, and there’s still the New Year celebrations to look forward to!
Every year at Christmas, I receive gifts and cards from some of the various advertising and affiliate networks that I do business with. It’s always nice to receive something, and it’s well worth any cost and/or effort on their end as it does remind the receiver that the company acknowledges you.
I’ve said this many times before, but receiving something physical, no matter how small, is a hundred times more meaningful and effective in this era of electronic mail and social networking.
For example, take this very blog post. I am going to be mentioning and linking to the 3 networks that sent me something… Continue reading
Payday Loan Affiliate Program by LeadsMarket.com Review
The following is a paid review for TylerCruz.com written and reviewed by Michael Kwan. It is completely of Michael Kwan’s opinion and is not influenced by being paid. If you’re interested in having your site or product reviewed, please view my advertising page
The world of affiliate marketing is increasingly competitive, especially when it comes to some of the most popular and lucrative niches. Payday loans are one such example, because there is so much money at stake. And if you want to make money in this niche, there is a new player in the game that could put a lot of cash in your pocket.
Boasting that it offers the “best payday loan affiliate program,” LeadsMarket.com offers one of the… Continue reading
Affiliate Marketing Update: $1,276.50 Yesterday
I set yet another 2 new records with yesterday’s affiliate marketing performance, but I got tired of titling these posts as such.
Yesterday was good, setting 2 new personal affiliate marketing records of mine, but the bad news is that I didn’t set a new net profit record yesterday. In fact, my overall ROI dropped from the previous day’s considerably (by about 50%).
However, I can’t complain. I still made just shy of $500 net yesterday, and I can’t expect to set 3 new records every single day.
New Record #1: 642 Leads in 1 Day
To be honest, as time goes on and I begin to send in these amounts of traffic, this particular "record" diminishes in its appeal to me, and so I’m… Continue reading
Affiliate Marketing Update: 3 More New Records
This post is going to look eerily similar to yesterday’s post, as I already managed to completely break and smash all 3 of the new records I just posted yesterday!
I am exhausted. It is 9AM and I only ‘napped’ 3 hours last night. All of this recent explosive growth in my affiliate marketing campaigns has made sleep a real difficult lately.
It’s not just a matter of excitement either. Since I’m starting to do some real volume now, I like to closely monitor how and what things are doing, as a small oversight or misstep could cause me a lot of money and/or grief.
Anyway, yesterday was my best day of affiliate marketing ever, by far. Here are my 3 new affiliate… Continue reading
Affiliate Marketing Update: 3 New Records!
What’s this? Three consecutive posts in 3 days!?
Well, these affiliate marketing update posts are pretty quick and easy to write. I don’t plan on posting so many regular updates on my affiliate marketing campaigns, but it’s just that things have really been moving the past couple weeks.
In fact, things have been moving so fast that I’ve been having a hard time sleeping lately.
Yesterday, I managed to break 3 new personal records on my affiliate campaigns.
New Record #1: 333 Leads in 1 Day
My previous record for number of leads in 1 day was 250, which I set back on November 7th.
I completely smashed that record yesterday with a total of 333!
What’s scary is that I am on pace to… Continue reading
Affiliate Marketing Update: New Gross Record
I set a new personal affiliate marketing record yesterday, grossing a total of $441.90 in a single day!
My previous high was on January 12th, 2010 at $397.
I fully understand that it’s rather silly to "celebrate" a gross income record, as anyone could have spent $400 or $800 and done the same thing, but I still like to celebrate it anyway as it hopefully means I’m moving in the right direction. Plus, I’ve always loved celebrating new personal bests in anything I do.
Below is a screenshot of the development of my campaigns in December so far:
While I set a new personal gross revenue day, I didn’t break my best net profit day, which was $233.39. However, I did come fairly close, ending… Continue reading
Affiliate Marketing Update: December 15th, 2011
I haven’t posted in a week because most of my "work time" lately has been devoted to working on my affiliate campaigns. Although, a good portion of that consists of hitting the refresh button
In my last update, I wrote about how I had a really good ROI and that I was going to try to scale things. However, I also mentioned how whenever I try to ramp things up that my ROI goes down the tube. It’s expected to drop, no doubt, but mine really plummets whenever I try to do any half-decent volume.
So I scaled things up this past week (and am continuing to do so), and did get my # of leads up to an average… Continue reading

Continue reading

Tremendo, ¿no?.
Continue reading
